Designed for an exhibition at the Walker Art Center titled
Trisha Brown: So That the Audience Does Not Know Whether I Have Stopped Dancing, this hard-bound, 2-color book includes essays from two Walker curators, a conversation with Brown over a commissioned drawing and a large plates section that surveys Brown's artwork.
One of the underlying themes seen throughout Brown's work is the utilization of the floor, wall and ceiling as stages and canvases for exhibiting her dance and drawings. This concept became a means by which we could react to and develop the book's design. Much in the way that Brown defines each space in which she performs, so do many of the elements of design seen throughout this book. For example, in the image of Brown on the book's cover, with her arms up and poised for her next choreographed movement, it appears as though she is defining the space (or the width) of the book cover itself. The full or forced justification of the typographic treatment on the cover and title pages, emphasizing the full use of the space on the page, is a way in which this concept is conveyed. The structuring of the image pages, fully pushed out to the book's margins, are also an element which help to communicate this concept.
This catalogue was designed in collaboration with Andrew Blauvelt and
Vance Wellenstein.
